The
Dora Stratou Dance Company is a non-profit organization, founded in 1953, and is
the living museum of Greek dance. Dances, songs and music are presented in their
original form that were or are still performed in the respective villages.
Costumes are authentic museum pieces, handmade in villages a century ago. The
company has 75 dancers and musicians; a wardrobe that contains more than 2,000
costumes from all over Greece, complete with jewellery and accessories.
Extensive ethnographic research under the direction of Professor Alkis Raftis
(President of the International Dance Council, CID UNESCO)
supports the authenticity of the performances. The cultural and educational
activities of the theatre are permanently financed by the Ministry of Culture,
the National Tourist Organization and other government agencies. The
performances take place in the open air theatre on Philopappou Hill opposite the
Acropolis.
The show starts at 21:30 from Monday through Saturday and at 20:15
on Sunday. On Mondays the theatre is closed.
Transfers to and from the
theatre can be arranged upon request and for a fee.
