Cyprus, between East & West (LIM – 01)

Approx. duration: 7hrs - minimum 30 participants

The port of PaphosThis tour will take you to the beautiful city of Paphos which is the ancient capital of Cyprus, and a favourite destination for those seeking a cultural break set against the stunning backdrop of the Troodos Mountains. Among the most ancient and beautiful towns in Cyprus, Paphos was in Hellenistic and Roman times the island's capital. So rich is it in ancient architectural and archaeological treasures, dating back thousands of years, that UNESCO has added virtually the entire town to its list of World Cultural Heritage sites. Also, legend has it that, the goddess Aphrodite was born here. Along this way, we will drive through the lemon, orange and grapefruit groves of Fasouri Plantations - a lush, tropical countryside.
Then, we will be in the footsteps of the Crusaders as we pass the Kolossi Castle (15th century A.D). This medieval castle was built in the late 13th century and subsequently rebuilt after a number of attacks in the middle of the 15th century. Within its walls are the ruins of an ancient sugar factory. Our first stop will be at the ancient city of Kourion, the introduction point of the Greek Culture in Cyprus. This extraordinary, ancient city-kingdom dates back to the 12th century BC and is an important archaeological site. You will be confronted with an impressive Roman amphitheatre which has been fully restored and is now used for concerts and theatrical events. Don't miss the stadium, the beautiful mosaics, and the maze of old baths, chambers and villas.
The views from the theatre are magnificent and extend across the Akrotiri Peninsula. We continue with a short coffee break to meet Aphrodite. We will see Aphrodite’s Rock, the Birth Place of the Love and Beauty Goddess. You will then continue to the famous and stunning mosaics depicting Greek mythology – the Pahos Mosaics. Originally laid as floors for the Roman nobility (3rd – 5th century AD) and dedicated to Dionysus, Aion, Theseus and Orpheus, the mosaics remained hidden until 1962; since then almost 1000 square feet have been unearthed and restored.
This is a true World Heritage Site. Lunch is served at Paphos. Our final visit will be at the Hellenistic cemetery of monumental Tombs of the Kings, dating back to the 4th century BC, the Egyptian introduction point.

The ancient theatre in Curium / KourionDrive along the east end of Limassol towards a cradle of mythology and archaeology. Your first stop and visit is at the Ancient City Kingdom of Amathus. This ancient royal city was built on a coastal cliff with a magnificent view of the azure seas.
The remains of the city date from the Roman and Christian periods. The pre-history of Amathus mixes myth and archaeology, tracing human activity from 1100 BC. It is also believed that here, a temple was built in honour of Aphrodite and Adonis, who named the city after his mother - Amathous.
Your next stop is at the medieval Castle of Limassol which was built by the Byzantines in 1000 A.D. In its chapel Richard the Lionheart married Princess Berengaria of Navarre when she accompanied him on his 3rd Crusade. The museum houses a variety of antiquities dating from 400 to 1870 A.D.
Following the complete conquest of the island in 1576 by the Ottomans, the ruins of the old castle or parts of it were incorporated into the new fort built by the Ottomans in 1590. A 2-metre thick wall and the specially tailored ground floor cells used as a prison until 1950 have proved to be two particularly important features.
